Capella

Capella is a sizable heavy oil field located in the under-explored Caguán-Putumayo basin on the Ombu block in southern Colombia. It was discovered by Emerald Energy in 2008 and represents both the first significant find in the area and also one of the largest finds to be made under the new ANH contracts. The field has three reservoirs, two in the Mirador formation (M1 and M2 sands) and one in the underlying conglomerate unit. The Mirador reservoirs are shallow, lying at depths above 1,200 metres. There are two sandstone zones present across the field, the Upper and Lower Mirador. The Upper Mirador sand is considered to be the more prospective formation (its porosity and permeability are better) and it ranges in thickness from two to 26 metres. The Lower Mirador sand is thicker, but not as high quality. It is a fractured conglomerate that ranges from 35 to 84 metres in thickness.
