Report summary
Lithuania is a minor oil producer. Most fields are mature and output has declined steadily in recent years. This has been driven by a lack of investment in both exploration and development activity. In 2011, Grupa LOTOS (Poland) acquired Geonafta, Lithuania's NOC. The company was renamed LOTOS Geonafta and remains the key oil and gas operator. With no domestic sales gas production, Lithuania has embarked upon several projects to diversify away from Russian imports. In 2015, Lithuania's first LNG regasification terminal – the Independence FSRU (floating storage and regasification unit) – was commissioned on the Baltic coast. Lithuania’s unconventional gas upside has not yet been realised. Its shales are thought to be analogous to Poland's Lower Paleozoic shale gas unconventional play. This remains the most viable option for the country to become a gas producer.
